Executive Board Endorses Elizabeth Crowley for Congress

TWU’s Executive Board has endorsed Elizabeth Crowley for the open seat in the 6th Congressional District in Queens, held for many years by retiring Rep. Gary Ackerman.

The Executive Board interviewed the three major Democratic candidates for the race, including Crowley, a member of the New York City Council, and Assembly members Rory Lancman and Grace Meng.  But when the vote came, it wasn’t even close.  “She really impressed us with her knowledge of public transit and her plans to promote our issues in Congress,” said Local 100 PAC Director Marvin Holland.

TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen said: “We think Elizabeth Crowley is going to be a dynamic new voice in Congress for New York’s working families.  We are thrilled to be endorsing a person with such a strong union background, and a person who we believe will advocate aggressively for a strong national policy for public transportation.  We know she will represent her district, our City, State and nation with great distinction.  Local 100 will to do everything within our power to get out the vote and help her across the finish line in upcoming primary.”

In accepting the union’s endorsement, Crowley announced her support for Local 100’s contract fight to defeat the MTA’s demands for multi-year pay freezes and cuts to member benefits.

“I’m proud to receive the endorsement from the workers who help drive our City’s economic growth,” said Crowley. “We need strong leaders in Washington that will fight for fair funding for public transit and stick up for working class families and protect their pay and pensions.”

Crowley is a union member, and throughout her career has been an advocate for job growth through infrastructure investments and protecting working men and women’s benefits and retirement.
