Coronavirus Takes Telephone Maintainer Aristedes Moraitis

Union members at the Telephone Shop on Northern Boulevard are mourning the passing of their union Brother, Aristedes Moraitis, say their reps, Executive Board Members Sherlock Bender and Mario Galvet.

Moraitis, 49, was “always at work,” according to his brother, Evan, who said that Aristedes wasn’t feeling well at the end of March and went to Urgent Care, then to the emergency room on Tuesday, April 2. He got a confirmed positive for COVID-19.

He tried to cope with the virus at home, but when he failed to answer the phone, Evan forced entry into the house on the morning of April 7 and found that he had passed.   Aristedes also leaves his sister, Katarina, who lives in Greece. Brother Moraitis had 10 years on the job.

MOW Vice President John Chiarello said that Aristedes “was beloved and respected by everyone he came into contact with.  He will be deeply missed on the job.”

Local 100 President Tony Utano added that “each new death of one of our brothers and sisters makes the heartbreak of this virus deeper and deeper.  We pray for his family and friends on the job.”
